Public transit in Albania is an adventure in itself. The country primarily relies on Furgons (privately owned minibuses). There are rarely strict timetables; instead, the bus simply leaves when it is full.

Renting a Car: If you plan to explore the southern Riviera (Sarandë and Ksamil), renting a car is highly recommended for freedom. However, be prepared for winding, mountainous coastal roads and assertive local driving styles. Always rent your car well in advance during the July/August peak season.

Albanian culture is deeply rooted in an ancient code of honor called Besa, which translates roughly to "to keep the promise." A major pillar of this is treating guests with absolute, utmost respect. You will find Albanians to be incredibly warm, generous, and eager to help foreigners. It is not uncommon for a local to walk you all the way to your destination if you ask for directions, or to be offered a welcoming shot of Raki (a strong local spirit) at a cafe.

While major hotels and upscale restaurants in Tirana will accept credit cards, Albania operates heavily on a cash economy. You will absolutely need physical Albanian Lek (ALL) for local bakeries, bus fares, small tavernas, and renting beach umbrellas in Ksamil. It is best to bring Euros to exchange at local exchange bureaus (which usually offer better rates than the airport) or use local ATMs, though be aware that most bank ATMs charge a standard withdrawal fee.
