Essential Armenia Travel Tips

Need-to-know information before you land in the Caucasus.

While Yerevan is highly walkable, navigating the rest of the country requires some planning.

Transit Apps: Download Yandex Go (or GG Taxi) before you arrive. These ride-hailing apps work perfectly in Yerevan and are incredibly cheap for getting to nearby sights like Garni and Geghard.
Marshrutkas: The traditional way to travel between cities is via "marshrutka" (shared minivans). They are highly affordable but leave only when full.
Trains: There is a highly recommended, comfortable modern train route running daily between Yerevan and Gyumri.

Armenia's primary tourist attractions are its magnificent, active Apostolic monasteries. While Armenians are very welcoming, respectful attire is required when entering these holy sites.

Men should avoid wearing shorts inside the churches. Women are generally required to cover their shoulders and knees, and it is highly recommended (and sometimes mandatory) for women to wear a headscarf when stepping inside the sanctuaries. Always carry a lightweight scarf in your day bag.

Armenian cuisine revolves around fresh, organic, locally sourced ingredients. You must try Khorovats (traditional Armenian barbecue), Tolma (stuffed grape or cabbage leaves), and fresh Lavash—a thin flatbread so culturally significant it is on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

Furthermore, Armenia is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world (dating back 6,100 years). Do not leave without visiting the wine bars on Saryan Street in Yerevan or taking a day trip to the Areni wine region to taste their robust, native grape varieties.
