Essential Brazil Travel Tips

Need-to-know information before you board your flight.

Brazil is massive—larger than the contiguous United States. To travel between major hubs like Rio, São Paulo, and Salvador, domestic flights (via LATAM, GOL, or Azul) are your best option and can be reasonably priced if booked in advance.

For shorter distances (under 6-8 hours), Brazil has an incredible network of long-distance buses. Look for "Leito" (bed) class tickets, which offer massive reclining seats, blankets, and air-conditioning, often rivaling first-class flights in comfort.

While Brazil is incredibly welcoming, petty theft can be an issue in major cities. The key is to blend in and minimize targets. Do not walk around with expensive jewelry, DSLR cameras around your neck, or your smartphone out in the open on busy streets. When visiting the beach, bring only the essentials (a towel, sunscreen, and a little cash). At night, rely on rideshare apps like Uber rather than walking long distances or hailing random taxis off the street.

Brazilian food is diverse and highly regional. You must experience a traditional Churrascaria (all-you-can-eat steakhouse) and try Feijoada (a rich black bean and pork stew, traditionally eaten on Saturdays). Tap water is not safe to drink, so always order "água sem gás" (still bottled water). Finally, keep in mind that Brazilians are warm and tactile; it is common to be greeted with a hug or a kiss on the cheek (or two, depending on the region) even when meeting someone for the first time!
