Essential Bulgaria Travel Tips

Need-to-know information before you board your flight.

Bulgaria relies on an extensive network of buses and trains. Buses are generally faster and more reliable than the aging rail system for intercity travel (like Sofia to Plovdiv). Renting a car is highly recommended if you want to explore the mountains or remote monasteries.

Crucial Tip: Bulgaria is the birthplace of the Cyrillic alphabet. While younger locals and tourism workers speak excellent English, street signs and bus schedules are often exclusively in Cyrillic. Learning to sound out the letters before you arrive will drastically improve your navigation!

This is perhaps the most famous cultural quirk in Bulgaria: non-verbal communication is reversed! Shaking the head side-to-side means "Yes," while nodding the head up and down means "No." Though many locals operating in tourist hubs try to adapt to Western norms, it frequently causes hilarious (and confusing) interactions. When in doubt, rely on the words Da (Yes) and Ne (No).

Bulgarian cuisine is a hearty, farm-to-table Balkan dream. You must start your meals with a fresh Shopska Salad (tomatoes, cucumbers, and a mountain of local white sirene cheese). Breakfast is invariably Banitsa—a flaky, buttery pastry filled with cheese and eggs, typically washed down with Ayran (a salty yogurt drink).

The Local Spirit: Dinners are traditionally kicked off with a shot of Rakia, a potent local fruit brandy. Sip it slowly alongside your salad—do not shoot it!
