Colombia has undergone one of the most remarkable transformations in modern travel history, stepping out of the shadows of its past to become one of South America's most captivating and sought-after destinations. It is a country defined by the concept of magical realism—a place where snow-capped mountain ranges plunge into dense Amazonian jungles, and where centuries-old stone fortresses guard powder-white Caribbean shorelines. Beyond the staggering biodiversity and the world-class coffee culture, Colombia’s true magic lies in the warmth and resilience of its people. Whether you are paragliding over the lush valleys of Antioquia, exploring world-class gold museums in the capital, or dancing until dawn to Afro-Colombian beats, Colombia pulses with an infectious, undeniable energy.

Need-to-know information before you board your flight to South America.
Looking at a map, Colombian cities might appear geographically close, but the towering Andes mountains dictate travel times. A bus ride from Bogotá to Medellín can take over 10 to 12 hours navigating winding, nausea-inducing mountain roads.
The Solution: Rely on Colombia’s excellent domestic flight network. Budget airlines like Avianca, LATAM, and Wingo run dozens of daily flights between major hubs. A flight from Bogotá to Medellín or Cartagena usually takes less than an hour and, if booked a few weeks in advance, costs roughly the same as a long-haul bus ticket.
Because Colombia sits so close to the equator, it does not experience traditional summer and winter seasons. Instead, the climate is dictated entirely by altitude.
• Bogotá (2,640m / 8,660ft): High, chilly, and frequently rainy. You will need a warm jacket, closed-toe shoes, and an umbrella.
• Medellín (1,495m / 4,905ft): The "City of Eternal Spring." Expect warm, pleasant days and slightly cool, breezy evenings. Light layers are perfect.
• Cartagena & Santa Marta (Sea Level): Sweltering, highly humid, and tropical. Pack linen, breathable cotton, and heavy-duty sunscreen.
Colombia is vastly safer today than in the 1990s, and millions of tourists visit without a single issue. However, petty theft remains a reality in big cities. Locals live by one universal rule: "No dar papaya" (Don't give papaya).
This translates to: Don't put yourself in a position to be taken advantage of. Do not walk around with your expensive smartphone out on the street, do not flash expensive jewelry, and do not hail taxis off the street at night (always use apps like Uber or Cabify). If you practice basic urban street smarts and keep a low profile, you will have a wonderfully safe and welcoming experience.
