Essential Costa Rica Travel Tips

Need-to-know information before you pack your bags.

Navigating Costa Rica takes a bit of planning due to its rugged terrain.

Rental Cars: Renting a 4x4 is highly recommended if you plan to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations, as many mountain and coastal roads are unpaved.
Shuttles: Shared tourist shuttles (like Interbus) are comfortable, air-conditioned, and connect all major hubs like San José, La Fortuna, and Puerto Viejo effortlessly without the stress of driving yourself.

Costa Rica features over a dozen microclimates. You can experience blistering heat on the Caribbean coast and require a thick sweater in the central cloud forests on the exact same day. Pack in layers! A lightweight, high-quality rain jacket is absolutely essential, regardless of what season you visit. Quick-dry clothing, sturdy hiking boots, and reef-safe sunscreen should be at the top of your packing list.

Costa Ricans take extreme pride in their environment. Always practice "Leave No Trace" principles. When hiking in national parks, stay on marked trails to protect fragile ecosystems. Most importantly, never feed the wildlife (especially monkeys and raccoons), as it disrupts their natural diet, makes them aggressive toward humans, and is strictly illegal.
