Need-to-know information before you pack your bags.
The Czech Republic boasts an incredibly dense, reliable, and affordable public transit network.
Trains: The railway system is the best way to see the country. Companies like České dráhy (CD) and the private carrier RegioJet offer comfortable, frequent connections between Prague, Brno, and beyond. Booking first class on RegioJet is highly affordable and often includes complimentary coffee and snacks.
Buses: For towns that are slightly trickier to reach by rail (such as Český Krumlov), modern coach buses like FlixBus or RegioJet buses are fast, air-conditioned, and feature onboard Wi-Fi.
Beer (pivo) is practically a religion in the Czech Republic, the birthplace of the modern Pilsner. When visiting a traditional pub, grab any open seat (sharing tables is common). A waiter will bring you a beer, often without asking, and mark a dash on a slip of paper kept at your table.
Etiquette: Always make strict eye contact when clinking glasses and saying cheers (Na zdraví!). Never cross arms with someone else while toasting. When it's time to pay, tell the waiter your total or simply round up the bill by about 10% for the tip directly as you hand them cash or card (do not leave the tip on the table).
Despite being in the EU, the Czech Republic uses the Czech Koruna (CZK), not the Euro. While many major hotels accept Euros, the exchange rate will be terrible.
Crucial Tip: Never exchange money at the small booths in tourist centers (especially around Prague's Old Town Square or Airport) that advertise "0% Commission," as they hide massive fees in terrible exchange rates. Instead, use a debit card at a reputable local bank ATM (like ČSOB, KB, or Raiffeisenbank), and always select "Decline Conversion" so your home bank handles the exchange rate. Avoid "Euronet" ATMs at all costs.
