El Salvador, affectionately known as the "Land of Volcanoes," is Central America's smallest but most densely packed gem. Often overlooked in the past, it has rapidly transformed into a premier destination for adventurous, in-the-know travelers. From scaling the craters of majestic active volcanoes and exploring ancient Mayan ruins, to riding legendary Pacific waves and sipping world-class coffee grown in rich volcanic soil, El Salvador offers an unfiltered, authentic, and deeply welcoming Latin American experience. Because of its compact size, you can easily wake up in a misty mountain town and be sipping a coconut on a black-sand beach by the afternoon.

Need-to-know information before you board your flight.
Because El Salvador is so compact, travel times are remarkably short compared to neighboring countries.
Uber & Taxis: Uber is highly reliable, safe, and inexpensive in San Salvador and for trips to the coast (like El Tunco).
Shuttles & Buses: For budget travelers, the colorful repurposed "chicken buses" are an adventure in themselves and cost mere pennies. For a more comfortable, air-conditioned ride between tourist hubs, private tourist shuttles are easily bookable through your hotel or hostel.
El Salvador uses the US Dollar (USD) as its primary fiat currency, making it incredibly convenient for American travelers—no mental math required! In 2021, the country also became the first in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. While you can pay for lattes, surf rentals, and hotel rooms with Bitcoin via the Lightning Network at many businesses (especially in El Zonte "Bitcoin Beach" and El Tunco), cash remains king for street food and small rural vendors. Always carry small bills ($1, $5, $10).
You cannot visit El Salvador without indulging in Pupusas—the national dish. These are thick corn (or rice) tortillas stuffed with savory ingredients like cheese, refried beans, and chicharrรณn (ground pork).
The Golden Rule: Eat them with your hands! It is considered a mild cultural faux pas to eat pupusas with a fork and knife. Simply tear off a piece, pinch some curtido (pickled cabbage slaw) and a dash of mild tomato salsa into it, and enjoy.
