Essential Indonesia Travel Tips

Need-to-know information before you board your flight.

Because Indonesia is spread across thousands of islands, getting around requires planning.

Flights: Domestic carriers like Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, and AirAsia are the best way to cross vast distances (e.g., Jakarta to Bali, or Bali to Komodo/Labuan Bajo).
Boats & Ferries: Fast boats are incredibly popular for short island-hops, particularly between Bali, Lombok, and the Gili Islands. Always book fast boat tickets a day in advance during the high season, and prepare for potentially choppy rides.

Indonesia is incredibly culturally diverse. While the country has the world’s largest Muslim population (dominating Java, Sumatra, and Lombok), Bali is predominantly Hindu, and areas of Flores/Komodo are heavily Catholic.

Dress Code: In Bali, beachwear is perfectly acceptable near the coasts, but you must wear a sarong covering your knees to enter temples. In Java and Lombok, dress more conservatively (covering shoulders and knees) as a sign of respect for Islamic customs. Always use your right hand when giving or receiving money, as the left hand is considered unclean in local culture.

The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) deals in large denominations; you will quickly become a "millionaire." Cash is absolutely essential once you leave high-end resorts or major malls in Jakarta and Bali. Ensure you carry smaller notes (20k and 50k) for local street food stalls (warungs) and tipping.

Must-Download Apps: Before arriving, download Gojek or Grab. These are the "Ubers of Southeast Asia" and are essential for safely booking incredibly cheap car and scooter rides, as well as delivering amazing local food straight to your hotel.
