Nicaragua remains Central America's most captivating frontier. Unlike its highly commercialized neighbors, this raw and authentic country offers intrepid travelers a chance to experience untouched natural wonders and deeply rooted cultural pride. Known as the "Land of Lakes and Volcanoes," the landscape is punctuated by smoking calderas, twin-volcano islands, and lush cloud forests. You can spend your days sandboarding down the black slopes of active volcanoes, wandering through brightly painted colonial streets echoing with revolutionary poetry, or catching legendary Pacific sunsets with the local surf community. Nicaragua is a destination that feels wild, welcoming, and profoundly real.

Need-to-know information before you board your flight.
Transportation in Nicaragua ranges from highly comfortable to culturally immersive.
Tourist Shuttles: Companies like Caribe Shuttle and local operators offer A/C minivans between Managua, Granada, Le贸n, and San Juan del Sur. They are safe, reliable, and cost around $15–$25 USD per leg.
Chicken Buses: For the adventurous budget traveler, converted North American school buses painted in vibrant colors run everywhere. They cost pennies, but expect crowded benches, loud reggaeton, and a much longer travel time. It's a rite of passage!
Nicaragua operates on a dual-currency system. The local currency is the Nicaraguan C贸rdoba (NIO), but US Dollars are widely accepted almost everywhere. However, USD bills must be crisp, untorn, and unmarked, or merchants will refuse them. When paying in USD, you will almost always receive your change in C贸rdobas. ATMs are readily available in Granada, Le贸n, and San Juan del Sur, but cash is king at smaller markets and street vendors.
You cannot visit Nicaragua without experiencing its seismic giants.
Cerro Negro (Le贸n): Hike up a young, black-gravel active volcano and ride a wooden sled down the slope at high speeds. It's one of the few places in the world you can do this.
Masaya (Granada/Managua): Take a night tour to the edge of the crater where you can literally stare down into a bubbling, glowing lake of active lava.
