Essential Philippines Travel Tips

Need-to-know information before you board your flight.

Because the country is a massive archipelago, traveling between major hubs (like Manila to Cebu or Palawan) requires booking domestic flights via Cebu Pacific, AirAsia, or Philippine Airlines. Always budget buffer time, as domestic flight delays are quite common.

Once on an island, you will navigate using uniquely Filipino transport: brightly painted Jeepneys for inter-city routes, motorized Tricycles for short town trips, and traditional outrigger boats called Bangkas for your daily island-hopping tours.

The Philippines is one of the easiest countries in Asia to navigate as an English speaker. English is an official language, taught in schools and used on all street signs and menus. You will quickly notice the extreme politeness of Filipinos—locals will almost universally address you as "Sir" or "Ma'am." Greeting locals with a warm smile goes a very long way, as the culture places a heavy emphasis on community (*bayanihan*) and joyous hospitality.

Connectivity: Internet speeds on remote islands (like Palawan or Siargao) can be notoriously spotty. Purchase a local tourist SIM card (Smart or Globe) directly at the airport upon arrival, or download an eSIM before you land. Download offline maps and your entertainment beforehand.

Cash is King: While major hotels and upscale restaurants in Manila or Cebu accept credit cards, smaller island vendors, tricycle drivers, and eco-tour operators operate strictly on cash. Always withdraw sufficient Philippine Pesos (PHP) while in major cities, as ATMs on smaller islands frequently run out of cash.
