Nestled at the crossroads of Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe, it is a country defined by stunning contrasts. In a single trip, you can marvel at the colossal, brutalist architecture of the communist era, hike through Europe’s last remaining virgin forests in the Carpathian Mountains, and wander through incredibly preserved Saxon villages that feel entirely frozen in time. Essential Romania Travel Tips

Need-to-know information before you board your flight.

The Railway (CFR): Romania has an extensive national rail network that makes traveling between major hubs like Bucharest, Brasov, and Cluj relatively easy. While affordable and incredibly scenic, Romanian trains are famously slow—treat the journey as part of the experience.

Renting a Car: To truly unlock the countryside, renting a car is highly recommended. It allows you to visit remote fortified Saxon villages and, if visiting between July and October, drive the legendary Transfăgărășan Highway—a winding alpine road famously named "the best road in the world" by Top Gear.

While Bram Stoker’s Dracula put Transylvania on the global pop-culture map, the reality of the region is far more fascinating. Bran Castle is marketed heavily as "Dracula’s Castle," but Vlad the Impaler (the historical inspiration) likely only stayed there briefly. Look past the vampire souvenirs and you will discover a region filled with gorgeous fortified UNESCO churches, thriving bear populations in the ancient forests, and a deeply authentic rural lifestyle that has vanished from much of Western Europe.

Romanian food is ultimate comfort food—rich, hearty, and heavily reliant on slow-cooked meats, garlic, and fresh dairy.
Sarmale: The national dish; delicious minced meat and rice rolled in pickled cabbage leaves, slow-cooked for hours.
Mici: Skinless, garlicky grilled sausages, perfectly paired with local mustard and a cold beer.
Papanași: A must-try dessert! A hot, donut-like pastry smothered in sour cream and sweet-tart berry jam.
Pro Tip: Meals are often started with a shot of Pălincă—a fiery, high-proof traditional fruit brandy. Sip slowly!
