Essential Serbia Travel Tips

Need-to-know information before you board your flight to the Balkans.

To truly understand Serbia, you must visit a Kafana. These traditional taverns are the absolute epicenter of Serbian social life. It’s where people go to eat, drink, debate politics, and listen to live, acoustic Balkan folk music (starogradska muzika). When you sit down, expect loud conversations, cigarette smoke, tables filled with grilled meats, and an incredibly welcoming atmosphere where locals will likely treat you like family.

Serbian gastronomy is hearty, portion sizes are massive, and meat is king. You absolutely must try Ćevapi (grilled minced meat sausages), Pljeskavica (the Balkan burger), and Ajvar (a sweet and savory roasted red pepper spread).

The Rakija Rule: You will undoubtedly be offered Rakija, the potent national fruit brandy (usually plum, quince, or apricot). It is a symbol of hospitality. Look your host directly in the eyes when you clink glasses, say "Živeli!" (Cheers), and remember to sip it slowly—it is not meant to be taken as a fast shot!

The Alphabet: Serbia officially uses both the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. While most young people and city-dwellers speak excellent English, street signs or rural bus schedules may only be in Cyrillic. Downloading the Serbian language on Google Translate for offline camera translation is highly recommended.

Getting Around: The bus network is the most reliable way to travel between cities like Belgrade and Niš. Always carry some cash (Dinars) for bus station platform fees. If you are heading north from Belgrade to Novi Sad, make sure to book the ultra-modern "Soko" high-speed train, which completes the journey in just 36 minutes.
