Essential Slovakia Travel Tips

Need-to-know information before you board your flight.

Slovakia boasts an excellent, affordable railway network connecting the west to the east.

Trains: The main railway artery runs directly between Bratislava and Košice, passing right through the scenic mountainous region of Poprad (the gateway to the High Tatras). The InterCity (IC) express trains complete this cross-country journey in under 5 hours.
Flying In: Many travelers heading to Slovakia actually fly into neighboring Vienna International Airport (VIE) in Austria. From there, it is a very fast, cheap 45-minute bus ride directly into central Bratislava.

Slovakia is world-renowned for its dramatic geography and history.

The Castles: With over 100 castles and chateaux, you cannot leave without visiting at least one. While Bratislava Castle dominates the capital, try to visit Spiš Castle (one of Europe’s largest ruined castle complexes) or the fairy-tale Bojnice Castle if venturing inland.
The Mountains: The High Tatras serve as the country's playground. If you plan to hike during the summer (June-September) or ski during winter, always check local mountain rescue warnings (HZS) and stick to marked trails, as the alpine weather here shifts rapidly.

Traditional Slovak food is hearty, rustic, and designed to keep mountain shepherds warm.

The absolute must-try national dish is Bryndzové Halušky—potato dumplings (similar to gnocchi) smothered in a sharp, fermented sheep's milk cheese and topped with crispy bacon bits. Don't miss ordering a bowl of thick garlic soup served inside a hollowed-out bread bowl. Wash it all down with Kofola, the local herbal alternative to Coca-Cola, or a shot of Tatratea, a potent herbal tea liqueur born in the High Tatra mountains!
