Need-to-know information before you board your flight.
While South Africa is an incredible destination, it does require a baseline of street smarts.
Golden Rules: Avoid walking alone at night in major cities—rely entirely on verified ride-share apps like Uber for evening transport. Keep your valuables (cameras, expensive phones) out of plain sight when walking in busy urban areas or waiting at traffic lights. When driving, keep your car doors locked and windows rolled up in city centers. By remaining vigilant and listening to local advice regarding "no-go" zones, the vast majority of tourists experience a perfectly safe and flawless trip.
Because of its massive size, getting between major hubs like Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban is best done by air. Domestic airlines like FlySafair, Lift, and Airlink offer frequent, affordable daily flights.
Road Tripping: If you have time, renting a car is highly recommended—especially for driving the famous Garden Route (between Mossel Bay and Storms River) or exploring the Cape Peninsula. The road infrastructure is generally excellent, and South Africans drive on the left side of the road.
If you are planning to visit Kruger National Park or a private game reserve, packing correctly is essential. Pack lightweight, neutral-colored clothing (khaki, olive, brown) to blend in and avoid attracting tsetse flies (which love dark blue and black).
Mornings on the back of an open 4x4 game vehicle are freezing, even in summer, so bring a warm fleece or windbreaker. Finally, consult your doctor about anti-malaria medication if you are visiting the eastern parts of the country (like Kruger) during the wet summer months.
