Essential Tunisia Travel Tips

Need-to-know information before you board your flight.

Tunisia is highly connected, making inter-city travel straightforward.

Louages (Shared Minivans): The backbone of Tunisian transit. These white vans with color-coded stripes depart only when full. They are incredibly cheap, very fast, and connect almost every town in the country.
Trains & TGM: The national railway (SNCFT) runs comfortable lines down the coast connecting Tunis, Sousse, and El Jem. In the capital, the TGM light rail is the easiest way to hop between central Tunis, Carthage, and Sidi Bou Said.

Tunisia is one of the most progressive and relaxed countries in the Arab world, blending Islamic tradition with a distinct French-Mediterranean influence. While beachwear (bikinis and shorts) is entirely normal in resort towns like Hammamet or Sousse, you should dress more conservatively when exploring the historic medinas or visiting mosques. Covering your shoulders and knees out of respect for local customs will ensure you receive the warmest hospitality.

Tunisian food is a brilliant fusion of Mediterranean, Berber, and Arab flavors, defined heavily by olive oil, tomatoes, and the national chili paste, Harissa. You absolutely must try a Brik (a crispy, deep-fried pastry pocket stuffed with tuna, parsley, and a runny egg) and traditional Tunisian Couscous, which differs from Moroccan variations by incorporating a rich, spicy red tomato broth. Finish every meal with a small glass of hot, intensely sweet green tea brewed with fresh mint and pine nuts.
