Essential Turkey Travel Tips

Need-to-know information before you board your flight.

Turkey is a massive country, making domestic travel logistics crucial.

Flights: To jump between Istanbul, Cappadocia (Kayseri/Nevşehir airports), and the coast (Antalya/Izmir), utilizing domestic flights via Turkish Airlines or Pegasus is highly recommended. Flights are remarkably affordable (often under $50 USD) and save you 10+ hours of driving.
VIP Buses: For mid-range distances, Turkey's intercity bus network (companies like Kamil Koç or Pamukkale) is surprisingly luxurious, offering wide plush seats, onboard Wi-Fi, and a dedicated attendant serving tea and snacks.

When visiting historic mosques (like the Hagia Sophia or Blue Mosque), strict dress codes apply. Both men and women must cover their shoulders and knees. Women are additionally required to cover their hair with a scarf (loaner scarves are usually available at the entrance, but bringing your own pashmina is easier). You must remove your shoes before stepping onto the mosque carpets. Avoid visiting during the five daily prayer times, particularly the busy Friday noon congregational prayer.

While traditional meat kebabs are spectacular, Turkish cuisine is incredibly diverse. You absolutely must experience a Serpme Kahvaltı—a legendary traditional Turkish breakfast consisting of dozens of small plates featuring local cheeses, olives, honey, clotted cream (kaymak), eggs, and endless glasses of tea. On the Aegean coast (Izmir, Bodrum), the culinary focus shifts to Mediterranean olive oil dishes, fresh grilled seafood, and diverse cold mezze platters paired with anise-flavored Raki.
