The Ultimate Uruguay Travel Hub

From the laid-back rhythm of Montevideo to the sun-drenched beaches of Punta del Este and the historic cobblestones of Colonia.

Uruguay is widely considered South America's best-kept secret. Nestled between the massive borders of Argentina and Brazil, this progressive, exceptionally safe, and peaceful nation offers a refreshing change of pace for travelers. Here, life moves at a relaxed rhythm dictated by the passing of a mate gourd and the lingering smoke of an evening asado. Whether you are strolling along the sweeping coastal Rambla of the capital, exploring off-the-grid bohemian beach towns along the Atlantic coast, or stepping back in time in centuries-old colonial settlements, Uruguay provides an authentic, uncrowded, and deeply charming South American experience.

Essential Uruguay Travel Tips

Need-to-know information before you board your flight.

Uruguay is highly compact and extremely easy to navigate. The primary mode of public transport is the bus network. Companies like COT and Copsa run modern, comfortable buses equipped with Wi-Fi from the Tres Cruces terminal in Montevideo to almost everywhere in the country. If you are arriving from Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Buquebus or Colonia Express ferries provide a seamless and scenic crossing over the Rio de la Plata.

You cannot walk a block in Uruguay without seeing someone with a thermos tucked under their arm, holding a hollowed-out gourd. This is Mate (a bitter, caffeinated herbal infusion), and sharing it is the ultimate symbol of friendship and hospitality.

Likewise, dining centers around the Asado (barbecue). Uruguayan beef is world-class, slow-cooked over wood coals rather than gas. Don't leave without visiting a Parrillada (steakhouse) and ordering a classic chivito sandwich.

Uruguay is slightly more expensive than its South American neighbors, but it makes up for it with amazing tourist perks. To encourage tourism, the Uruguayan government often offers a VAT (Value Added Tax) refund on restaurant meals, car rentals, and hotel stays when you pay with a foreign credit or debit card. The discount (which can be up to 18-22%) is usually applied automatically to your card statement!
