Panama is Central America’s most compelling juxtaposition. While globally renowned as the "Crossroads of the World" due to its engineering marvel, the Panama Canal, this S-shaped isthmus offers far more than a maritime shortcut. It is a country where a hyper-modern, cosmopolitan skyline gives way to the historic, colonial charm of Casco Viejo in a matter of blocks. Venture beyond the capital, and you will discover cloud forests echoing with the calls of howler monkeys, volcanic highlands producing some of the world's most coveted coffee, and idyllic, palm-fringed archipelagos where Caribbean rhythms set the pace of daily life.

Need-to-know information before you board your flight.
Panama’s official currency is the Panamanian Balboa, but it is pegged 1:1 to the US Dollar. In reality, US paper dollars are used everywhere for all transactions. You will likely receive Panamanian coins (Balboas) as change for smaller amounts, but no paper Balboas exist. If you're coming from the US, there's no need to exchange money—just bring small bills ($1, $5, $10, $20), as many small vendors will struggle to break $50 or $100 bills.
While Panama isn't massive, getting from the capital to the islands takes time.
Domestic Flights: The fastest way to reach places like Bocas del Toro or David (for Boquete) is by flying out of Albrook "Marcos A. Gelabert" International Airport (PAC)—not the main Tocumen (PTY) airport. Air Panama operates these daily routes.
Buses: Panama has an extensive and very affordable long-distance bus network departing from the Albrook Bus Terminal. If you take an overnight bus, pack warm clothes—they blast the AC to freezing temperatures!
Panama is a tropical country close to the equator, so it is hot and humid year-round. However, it operates on two distinct seasons: Dry Season (mid-December to mid-April) and Green (Wet) Season (May to November). During the Green Season, you can expect heavy, intense downpours usually lasting an hour or two in the afternoon, followed by clear skies. Bocas del Toro on the Caribbean side has its own micro-climate and can experience rain year-round, but generally has drier months in September and October!
